Perhaps there was a time when you were always at the gym, pumping iron and getting loads of cardio on the treadmill. Maybe you even spent Sunday nights preparing your meals for the rest of the week to keep track of your macros. You even had a regular stock of the very best protein powders and supplements that can help you with your gainz.
Ahhhh, those were the glory days.
Now that you’re a dad, it’s a challenge to maintain your gym habits. And even more challenging to stick to a diet. If you’re being completely honest with yourself, you know that you’re now on the softer side now, with a little bit of “extra” around the gut – so far from the chiseled model you once were!
It’s no coincidence that all these changes in your body happened around the time when you became a parent. After all, taking care of a baby can be stressful – it can take away all your gym time and cause you to be so sleep deprived. And let’s not even go into all the stress eating!
You never thought you’d get a dad bod, did you? But hey, it’s here and to tell you the truth, there’s absolutely nothing wrong about it. In fact, you should learn to embrace it.
Here are five reasons why you should totally own your dad bod:
- Your lady loves it!
That guy with washboard abs? Yeah, he looks cool but your lady isn’t even looking at him at all. You see, there comes a point when the way you look isn’t the most important thing in the world. Of course, it is still very important to take care of yourself. And this is not an excuse to forget all your grooming habits. But it’s a little reminder that if your lady loves you, it’s probably not because of your physique.
- You get to enjoy chicken, beer, relaxing movie nights
It’s no secret that fries, burger, wine, beer, chips, and cake aren’t exactly healthy. But these are key ingredients to making memories and strengthening relationships.
You know what I’m talking about.
You and your partner probably enjoy drinking beer and eating popcorn while watching something on Netflix. Or maybe you just decide to order pizza one evening out of sheer exhaustion from childcare duties. Maybe you decide to order cake to celebrate the first time your baby sleeps through the night.
These mini “celebrations” and bonding moments are just not possible if you’re always in the gym or you’re always worried about what you eat.
- It shows that you put your family first
Now don’t get me wrong, men who are dedicated to keeping their lean physique or bulging muscles are truly admirable on so many levels. But men who prioritize their families over personal interests and hobbies are pretty amazing too.
When your life is not revolving around your gym schedule or preparing your meals, you have more energy to help with the chores around the house and taking care of the newborn.
- It’s body positivity at its finest
Society has taught us that men should have a broad back, thick chest, and muscular biceps. But by now you should know that this isn’t the true measure of manliness.
Most body positivity messages are targeted for women, but men – dad, especially – should start spreading the message that being a good man comes in all shapes and sizes. Don’t let society pressure you into thinking that you have to look a certain way to be desirable. Instead of worrying about all the muscle you no longer have, why not embrace this season of your life instead?
- It’s real
When you think about it, life includes broccoli and pizza, squats and sleeping in, hustle days and lazy days. What we see in magazines are not achievable unless you make a big sacrifice in other areas of your life. Having a dad bod allows you to live your life with balance. It’s real, it’s familiar, and completely lovable!
